Simple and Easy Art Supplies Kids Need to Make Art

art activity ideas art ideas for kids Jul 06, 2022

Sometimes Creating Art or going to an Art Supply or Hobby store is intimidating, stressful, and expensive. The reality is that kids DON'T need fancy and expensive art mediums to make art. They just want to create. The reality is that you can make a lot and explore a range of techniques with very little. Let's dive in on Simple and Easy-to-Use, Inexpensive Art Supplies Kids need to make Art in your Home.

1. Wax Crayons

The first medium to grab is wax crayons. I love wax crayons because they are so easy to use, versatile, washable, kids don't need help using them, you don't have to sharpen them constantly and watch the lead fall out (I have trauma), they make bright colors, they're good until you can't hold them anymore, they melt, they harden, what isn't there to like about them.

Sure they break more now adays I find (or maybe my adult hands are too rough), but to be honest, once they're in half sizes, they are easier to hold and now you just doubled that color which is great if you have a growing family.

2. Oil Pastels.

Oil pastels are like wax crayons in that they are bright and bold, good till you can't hold them, good if you break them, and also are great for resist painting. The thing with oil pastels though is that you can layer the colors, blend the colors together like paints, and even create tints, tones, and shades. Perfect painting skills without any paint.

3. Felt Markers.

I love felt markers and I never used to. But once I started diving in on using them again when I was a teacher for 10 years, I suddenly realized there was a lot more to the art medium. The washable ones can be used for felt marker painting and they make beautiful, bold color. You can add texture or patterns to elements in art, or make brightly colored cartoons.

4. Watercolor Paints.

I love watercolor paints. They are good till the last drop. Also, if you get the tube kind, you can put a dab onto your plastic palette and let it dry out completely. Next, just add water to your brush and swirl your brush onto the dry paint on the palette and it re-hydrates. BOOM. Paint that CAN dry out and be used till it is gone. Also, watercolor paints work well for resist painting with your wax crayons and oil pastels which is why they're on my list.

5. Cardstock paper.

Kids don't need fancy paper. Get that for when they want to do special artworks or for when they're teens. I like to buy a big package of card stock or cover stock paper because it is thicker, and then just use that. Honestly, 50 to 100 pages of card stock is like the same price of some sketchbooks but you get WAY MORE and kids just want to make a bunch of creations that they may or may not keep forever. So for all their creative experimentations, grab cardstock because specialty paper is expensive and normal paper is too thin and will dissolve with paint.

And these are the only mediums I use when teaching in Artastic Kids. As a professional artist, I can show you how to use them in a ton of different ways and make art a routine in your home. Let your kids make UNLIMITED Artworks every month. Learn more about Artastic Kids by Clicking Here.
