How-To Get Your Kids Interested in Making Art

One of the joys in Making Art with your kids is watching their faces light up at the art they make. But you might be stuck at how-to get your child interested in art. Let's dive in on 5 of the BEST Ways to have Your Child or Kids Making Art and Turn it into an Easy-to-do Routine in your home to allow for Success.

Create Art Together

One way to inspire your child or kids to make art and to get them interested in this passion is to make it a family activity. Create a new opportunity for family connection and bonding (leave your devices in a separate room or turn them on silent. Focus on each other and give undivided attention) by making art together. I think there is nothing more beautiful than gather at the kitchen table or at a counter or on the floor with clipboards and making art. You can put out 2 to 3 art mediums for everyone to use and explore and put on some fun music. Create an atmosphere and inspiration will come your way. Visit Art Galleries and Museums

Another way to get your kids interested in making art is by taking them to art galleries and museums.

There are a few different types of Art Galleries: Public Art Galleries, Commercial Art Galleries, and Artist Run Centers or Art Galleries. They all provide different ranges of experiences and show a different range of artworks. Start by Googling art galleries in your area and select 3-5 you will visit in one day. Often, if you're visiting a city to visit art galleries, you can visit a few in day because you can most likely find a few within walking distance.

If you're doing a major Art Museum, I would do just the one as they are very large and overwhelming as there is so much to look at. You can even have your kids bring a small sketchbook so they can sit and try and draw some of the artworks as they look at them.

Create an Easy to Grab Art Tub

I love making art easy. The harder it is to get set up and make art, the less likely you and your family will do it. So if you want to get your kids interested in making art, then create an Art Tub that is just a basket or Rubbermaid tub or plastic bin that is full of your plastic table cloth, paper, a couple dollar store clip boards, and basic art making mediums. I would also put your art prompt list in that tub so that everything is together and EASY to use. The faster you can grab and set up and put away, the more likely you will use them and make art and your kids will be interested in creating because it won't be such a big, stressful, messy deal. Make it a positive experience from day one.

Make it a Routine

If you want to get your kids interested in art and have them focused on creating art not only one time, but build a passion for over repeated experiences, then make it a routine. Decide on one day of the week or schedule 3 evenings in a month (maybe every second Friday night and alternate movie night/art night) and make art as part of a new routine. It takes 18 days to create a new habit and 66 days to make that habit automatic. So making art one time won't get your kids interested in art. This is why, if you really want to make your kids interested in art, make it a new routine and schedule time to create together.
